230 – Mortising Jigs & Through Mortises

There are lots of methods available for making mortises. One of the most versatile tools for mortising is the hand-held router. You can do a lot with the manufacturer’s edge guide but you can do even more if you know how to design and construct simple jigs or guides.


rockler-guide-bushingsI usually make my guides from scrap pieces of plywood or MDF and I use them in conjunction with guide bushings. Because I never quite know what bit/bushing combination I’m going to use, it’s a good idea to have a full set of guide bushings on hand at all times. I recommend the Rockler Guide Bushing Kit.


The key to making these jigs is to know the distance between the edge of the router bit and the edge of the guide bushing. Let’s say you’re using a 1/4″ bit and a 3/8″ guide bushing. That means you’ll have 1/16″ on each side of the bit for a total of 1/8″ difference. So if you’re designing a jig to cut a particular dimension, you should make sure the channel in the jig is 1/8″ wider than your desired mortise width.


You can use jigs like this for standard mortises of just about any size, as well as more fancy joinery like through mortises (an example I show in the video). Essentially, the sky is the limit. Best of all, you can make these jigs in minutes on the fly while working on a project. As long as you know your dimensions, you can knock a simple jig out in mere minutes.

How To Make Strong Wooden Pegs Without A Dowel Plate

A good peg, is a lot more than a roughly ragged out bit of round wood. When you’re draw-boring, or just reinforcing a joint, you need a peg that’s strong. A good wooden peg should be straight grained, slightly tapered and preferably made up of a series of flats. I’m going to show you the two most common methods that I use. There’s two because it varies depending upon the material we start out with. In this part we’ll look at my favourite method, the ‘Split & Whittle’. This is all about timber selection, as we need a peg that’s straight grained and with the grain running parallel in both planes. You should also use a good stiff hardwood like oak, and be sure it’s nice and dry. I normally use riven wood for this, that’s wood which has been split from the log rather than sawn, as this way you’re almost guaranteed to get that straight and more importantly, parallel grain. One of the greatest things about being a woodworker is the fact that you can build things that will make a difference in people’s lives. Whether it’s a comfortable chair for your living room, a cutting board for your kitchen, or toy box for a child, we all have the power to bring great joy to other people by making things with our hands, some wood, and a few choice tools. Never has this “power” been so palpable as when I was asked recently to make a memorial box for my Uncle Tom. I’ll admit that I found the task very difficult, not only for emotional reasons but because I had a time constraint of only two days.
